How I Make a Two-Color Dip Pen: Part 2 of 2
In this, the second of two videos I show you how I make my pens. You don't need the metal working lathe to do this but it makes it faster. This is a great project for someone who likes to tinker in the shop. You can find lots of beautiful and commercially unavailable woods around town or in a wood pile. I hope you enjoy the video.

Cherry Iron Gall Ink? An Experiment in Ink Making.
Переглядів 7428 років тому
In this video I share with you an experiment I conducted to see if it is possible to make an iron gall-like ink from cherry bark. The theory was that the cherry bark would have tannins just as an oak gall. As such, I should be able to make an ink from it using a similar process. These results were interesting and I would like one day to recreate the experiment with fresh bark. If you have inter...

How to not spill your sample ink vial.
Переглядів 5828 років тому
I tend to use ink sample vials while at my office or traveling. From time to time I have spilled my ink because the center of gravity so high and the vials are so unstable. This happened again the other day and I decided to find a solution. This is what I came up with. It's simple, cheap, and effective. I hope you enjoy it.
Comparing Iron Gall ink and Fountain pen ink on inexpensive paper

In this video I will discuss briefly how Iron gall ink is made and compare the performance of iron gall ink vs fountain pen ink on inexpensive papers. I will show you the results of a 4 month UV light resistance test as well as the results from soaking a page in running water. Iron Gall ink is a great way for a dip pen user to be able to practice on even cheap papers. Unfortunately, you will no...

My Top Three Nib Choices for a Beginning Vintage Dip Pen User

In this video I will discuss my top three choices for a beginning dip pen user. This is not a video about calligraphy but rather daily correspondence or business writing. I will cover the three types of lines commonly used in this type of writing. These are a mono line, an italic and a slightly flexible and sharp line. One of the considerations in selecting the top three were price and availabi...
How To Billet and Dry Small Pieces of Salvaged Wood for Pen Making
Переглядів 1,8 тис.9 років тому
You can find a lot of real neat woods in a wood pile. They are small and wet but for a small project like turning a dip pen or pen kit they are perfect. Watch this video to learn how to dry the wood so it does not twist and warp on you. Similar principals apply when drying large boards but you will of course need stronger materials. Here are some tips: * When sawing think of the direction you a...
Review of the Geo W. Hughes Ajusto stub nib
Переглядів 5479 років тому
This is a review of the "Ajusto" nib by Geo W. Hughes using Noodler's American Eel ink. The ink is a lubricated ink. The nib is an italic nib with what I call a turned up tip. The tip of the tines is turned up like a globe or oval nib. The nib is made of a brass type of material. There is what I will call a moderate amount of flex with this nib. Aside from the turned up tip, which I have not se...

This is a short review of the Jackson Stub by Esterbrook. This nib is another in the Italic/Relief series of nibs from Esterbrook. This is another good option to filling the pen. I didn’t think of it because it would get my fingers inky and I wouldn’t know when to stop filling the sac. I don’t think I would do it this way but its cool to see this method.

umm ... lift and release the lever after you dip it in the bottle. If you raise the lever first (which compresses the sac) any ink in the sac is going to be pushed out. causing a rather unnecessary mess. You lost me with "Raise the lever, dip the pen, and release the lever." If you're changing ink that often, why not use it like a dip pen? The feed holds a lot of ink. You won't have to dip every couple words, or inches if drawing like you woul a dip pen. Worst case, why not just dip it, work the lever once, and do what you need to do? That way the feed is already saturated and ready to write. You don't HAVE to fill the sac completely using the lever. (it takes raising and lowering the lever 5 or 6 times to fill my Esterbrook "J" pens, and Waterman's Dauntless lever fill pens) I can't see any use where filling an Esterbrook lever fill pen with a syringe is an advantage. If you want an eye dropper pen, may I suggest a set of seven translucent Jinhao 992, for under $15 on Amazon? They can be eye droppered, if you don't want to use a cartridge or included converter. (fill the barrel with water first to make sure the barrel finial isn't leaking. If it is, pull the finial and super glue it in.) You won't need silicon grease if you eye dropper them. The "O" rings at the barrel/section and on the screw-in nib housing prevent ink leaks. Even better, with seven pens you can ink each one with one of the seven inks you use the most. No more cleaning and loading the pen whenever you change ink! How convenient is that?!? 😁👍

A story to illustrate the power of positive thinking: I have been into fountain pens for about a year+. The other day I heard about dip pens, (not for the first time) but it was the first time I thought. Hey that’s interesting. Then for about 2 days I was contemplating getting a dip pen and to try it out. Thinking to get some from Goulet pens, FYI they only carry glass dip pens, which have no flex. Then I met with a client and as we worked on his documents (I’m a notary) he noticed my fountain pen and asked if I like to do calligraphy. I said I’m getting into it. He then mentioned that his mother was into calligraphy and had some boxes full of supplies including papers, and dip pens and nibs. He was thinking of throwing them out. I said I would take it off his hands. Now I have someone’s lifetime supplies of calligraphy tools!!

Your handwriting is amazingly good. Wish I could write like that. At best my writing looks like lots of round noodles coiled in circles. At worst it looks like a spider with parkinsons has fallen in an ink pot and crawled out to die... PS I've done the inks in the window test and I found that ballpoint pen ink was by far the worst. It literally vanished to nothing except the indentations left by the pen. Lamy black fountain pen ink didn't fade. Indian ink didn't fade, neither did Chinese ink. Rollerball ink and gel ink didn't fade. These were all black inks. I've got some blue-black registrar's ink [Diamine] which is supposed to be iron-gall ink. It works perfectly in a fountain pen and it's proper permanent. If you spill water on it, the writing remains totally unscathed.
